Javier G. Fernandez
Co-Founder, Chitonous Pte. Ltd.
My research is focused on the broad study, development, and application of biological materials in science and technology.
I have been awarded the world’s most outstanding young researcher in Materials Science by the Bayer Foundation. I have also been awarded best PhD thesis at the University of Barcelona for studies in the use of biopolymers in Microelectronics and Biomedicine. My post-doctoral work at MIT on the development of the “Micro-Masonry” has been highlighted as “breakthrough in tissue engineering” (CNET).
As investigator at the Wyss Institute, my work is centered on elucidating the design principles of structural biosystems and applying those principles to create new classes of materials with exceptional properties. One of most recent results of this work is the design and fabrication of “Shrilk”, a compostable and biocompatible material inspired by the insect cuticle. Shrilk is referred, for example, to as “one of the materials that will change the future of manufacturing” (Scientific American), or simply a “Supermaterial” (National Geographic).
My work and ideas have been extensively covered by the media. Of special interest to understand this vision, is the documentary by BBC within the series “Genius of Nature”, or the article by Harvard Gazette “As strong as an insect’s shell”. My opinion on environmental policies and sustainable development can be found, for example, at the personal interview for the science programme of BBC Radio “Costing the earth”.

Michael Petch
Editor-in-Chief, 3D Printing Industry
As a researcher and analyst I believe sharing ideas and in depth discussion is a vital step in revealing macro trends, or getting to the big picture.
My interests have always been diverse and range from engineering technology to international financial markets and sustainable agriculture. My early career as a Chartered Accountant gave me the opportunity to act as primarily point of contact during audit fieldwork. Interaction with everyone from seasoned CEO’s to apprentices taught me the value of combining technical accounting knowledge with softer skills to fully understand an enterprise.
Since then I’ve worked with businesses ranging from multinational investment banks to patent attorneys with fewer than 10 partners. I have experience in industries such as film financing and production, emerging forms of agriculture and energy generation, semiconductor solutions for decentralized networks, cryptocurrencies, and innovative mobile applications from China to Canada and the Middle East to Europe or the U.S.
I divide my time between consultancy work and writing books and magazine articles. At the moment I’m working on my 3rd book about 3D printing, also I’m a regular writer for 3DP publications and am often invited to speak at conferences on a range of topics. Recently I’ve given presentations on nano-materials and graphene in China, spoken about 3D printing and food at SXSW and will be delivering a presentation on the remarkable field of material topology and rare earth metals later in the year.
I’m always keen to discuss areas such as 3D printing, automation, Industry 4.0, or the digital economy and how macro or micro trends shape society or the economy.
