About Challenge
How will you develop a sustainable design that is within a constraint of 1 kilogram using additive manufacturing technologies, also known as 3D printing?
Additive manufacturing technologies, also known as 3D printing (3DP) is a diverse set of technologies where products are created by building layers of material on top of one another until a complete 3D object is formed. When COVID-19 disrupted demand and supply chains, 3DP machines pressed on to fill the gaps for essential items. 3DP’s potential to revolutionise the way products are designed, manufactured, and supplied can be seen in sectors such as aerospace, precision engineering, biomedical, construction and more.
In 2019, a community of interior designers of 8 major Japanese auto brands came together as JAID (Japan Automotive Interior Designers) and demonstrated the potentialities of ideas, creativities and additive manufacturing technologies.
As the cost of automotive materials is often expressed in terms of “unit price per kg”, JAID was challenged to create value within a 1 kilogram constraint.
Sustainable design is becoming increasingly crucial with climate change being the crisis of our time. It is no longer about having aesthetically pleasing designs but as designers we have a responsibility in ensuring that our design makes the environment a better place, both directly and indirectly.
We are bringing the 1kg challenge to Singapore to showcase Singapore’s vision and commitment to create a sustainable and innovative future using additive manufacturing.
Details of the challenge

We challenge the creativity of the public and students to develop a 1kg 3D printable sustainable design model; selected designs will be 3D printed for judging and public exhibition during the Singapore Design Week from 21 September to 1 October 2023.
We welcome anyone residing in Singapore regardless of age or background to participate.
You may choose to participate as an individual or in a team.
The open call submission closes on 30 June 2023. It would require the submission of a 3D model file with an introduction of no more than 500 words explaining the concept and ideation relating to sustainability. No printing is needed during the open call round.
Shortlisted designs that advance into the finals for print and exhibition will be notified via email on 17 July 2023.

Judges
Dawn Lim
Dawn Lim
An experienced leader in business development and strategy, Dawn stepped into the leadership role at DesignSingapore as Executive Director from 1 May. Prior to this, she helmed Singapore’s global leadership ambitions in Commercial & Professional Services at the Economic Development Board – Singapore’s lead economic agency. In this role, she engaged and attracted the world’s leading organisations in the consulting, accounting, marketing and advertising, as well as engineering services and logistics sectors. She has a proven track record of working across private and public sector partners to negotiate deals and deliver major strategic initiatives and investments.
She also formerly headed EDB’s European team to advance Singapore’s business engagements with Fortune 500 companies across a wide range of industries, bringing in more than US $1 billion in investments annually. Under Dawn’s stewardship, the Singapore EDB established its first office in Switzerland. Previously, she headed EDB’s logistics industry team in Singapore.
Dawn also spent several years at port operator PSA honing her skills in the shipping industry while serving as chief of staff to the CEO and global account commercial manager for top shipping lines. She holds a BSc from Georgetown University and an MSc from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. One of her proudest moments was sharing the Singapore development story as part of Stanford GSB’s Lowkeynotes speaker series. (You can catch it on her LinkedIn)
Dawn is also a Design Economy Ambassador to the UK Design Council – the only Southeast Asian and female to be represented. She is a design thinker, swing dancer, and a better baker than a cook. She is a mentor with the Halogen Foundation1 as well as an advisor to a start-up, MagicPort. Often found bobbing along to jazz, she also easily breaks out into classic oldies and boyband tunes when the occasion calls for it. If she could, she’d take her senior adopted dog, Mi Gua, everywhere.

After a successful career in MMA, Yuji Hara went on to become an entrepreneur in the additive manufacturing space, founding ExtraBold Inc. in 2017 with a focus on plastics recycling and bio-based resins under the Green Creative Initiative™.

A. PROFESSOR CARLOS BAÑÓN
Carlos Banon is co-founder of Subarquitectura Architects Spain, Associate Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, and co-founder of AirLab @SUTD. He holds an M.Arch. with Extraordinary Distinction.
He also held visiting professorships at MIT Massachussetts Institute of Technology and at EPFL, and was invited to lecture by a number of universities, including ETSAM Madrid, UIC Barcelona, KEA Copenhagen and PUPR Puerto Rico. His research projects span from Geometric Exploration for Space Making (GESM), 3D Printing applied to actual building components, Artificial Intelligence applied to high-rise developments, and Affordable Housing prototypes.
He also implements his research and teaching methodologies in Design Studios where he applies Parametric Design, into actual buildings through his architectural practice. He was awarded with the Design of the Year Prize by the London Design Museum, received international recognition with the Golden Medal given by the International Olympic Committee, the Spanish Biennial Prize and the Mies Van der Rohe Prize nomination.

Matthew Tseng is an experienced project and engineering management professional in the energy industry, focusing on offshore oil and gas assets as well as green technology innovations aimed as decarbonising the maritime industry. Matthew holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
