Two locally designed artworks are now orbiting Earth aboard the International Space Station (ISS), as part of a 64-piece Moon Gallery collection of miniature works by international artists.
They reached the space station on Monday (March 14) on a cargo craft, and will spend the next 10 months as part of a test flight for artists to learn how the different designs and materials perform in the microgravity of space.

Two artworks by Singaporean artist Lakshmi Mohanbabu will be part of 100 art pieces to be permanently displayed on the moon in 2025. The two art pieces, cube-like structures which measure less than 1 cubic centimetre, are part of art gallery Moon Gallery, which is currently orbiting Earth on the International Space Station (ISS). The first cube, titled “The Cube of Interaction”, was created in collaboration with NTU Assoc Prof Daniel New. The second cube, titled “Structure and Reflectance”, was created in partnership with NTU Asst Prof Matteo Seita. They used two different types of crystals to create a solid metal cube that reflects light differently.

Two locally designed artworks by an Indian-origin artist in Singapore are now orbiting Earth aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a 64-piece Moon Gallery collection of miniature works by international artists. Lakshmi Mohanbabu has been working on the art project for the past two years in collaboration with the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (Namic). The first cube, titled The Cube of Interaction, was prototyped in collaboration with Assoc Prof Daniel New from the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing at NTU. The second cube, named Structure & Reflectance, features four unique faces that were made by changing the crystal orientation of steel during the 3D printing process. This is a proprietary technique developed by Asst Prof Matteo Seita and his team from NTU’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering.

They created two iterations of the cube in different materials and identified the most suitable material. The second cube, named Structure & Reflectance, features four unique faces that were made by changing the crystal orientation of steel during the 3D printing process, a proprietary technique developed by Asst Prof Matteo Seita and his team from NTU’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
