The Future of Manufacturing – Grand Challenges
What does it take for AM to move beyond? The third webinar will continue to explore the grand challenges of AM as a sunrise industry and its potential for growth. There will be three talks followed by a panel discussion. The panel discussion will be moderated by Prof Paulo Bartolo, SC3DP Executive Director.
Speakers
Dr Martin White
Dr Martin White is Head of Additive Manufacturing Programs – European region at ASTM International responsible for various AM programs in Europe. Dr White is a Materials & Structures Specialist, with 20 years of experience in both academic and industrial fields. His recent career focused on the Certification & Production of Aerospace structures, ranging from the A350-900 XWB Main Landing Gear at Safran Landing Systems, to his most recent role as Chief Engineer for Additive Manufacturing at GKN Aerospace.
Dr White spent his early career studying with Rolls Royce at Swansea University to obtain a Doctorate in High Temperature Materials for Gas Turbine applications, as well as a Masters in High Strength Steels for Landing Gears (with Airbus), before spending several years as a consultant at Frazer-Nash Consultancy.
Dr Robert Scudamore
Dr Robert Scudamore joined TWI following a PhD in materials in 2000. He started working on AM in 2002 and has since mainly worked on metallic laser Direct Energy Deposition and laser Powder Bed Fusion. Dr Scudamore now leads AM corporately, including areas such as processing, modelling, testing and inspection. He is Manager of the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Group and an Associate Director at TWI.
Dr Scudamore has been Chair of the UK AM National Strategy, and a committee member of the EC sponsored AM Platform and the EFFRA Partnership Board. He has chaired many workshops and conference sessions, and has run over twenty events promoting AM, including the Metal AM Symposium, which attracted over 350 attendees from over 30 countries in November 2020. He is a Fellow of The Welding Institute and a Chartered Engineer.
Dr Manyalibo Matthews
Dr Manyalibo (“Ibo”) Matthews currently serves as Division Leader of the Materials Science Division of the Physical & Life Sciences Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the field of experimental condensed matter physics, and his B.S. in Applied Physics from the University of California at Davis. His research interests include understanding and optimising metal 3D printing processes, laser materials processing, high power laser damage mechanisms, laser-based nanoscale modification of surfaces, and in-situ characterisation of transient processes.
Prior to LLNL, Dr Matthews was Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, where he worked on advanced methods for optical materials characterization and led a research team in advanced broadband access networks. Dr Matthews has published over 160 peer-reviewed articles with >7400 citations, two book chapters. He holds 16 U.S. Patents and is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America.
